Please join us on Tuesday, July 23, at 7 p.m., for a fascinating Author Talk with Anthony R. Whitworth on The Saltwater Highway: One Man's Journey Through the International Dry Bulk Maritime Market.

According to the International Chamber of Shipping, a global trade organization, 90% of world trade moves via the oceans. Yet few people know very much about the maritime shipping industry. Tony Whitworth's book, chronicling his nearly 5 decades in the industry, hopes to remedy that. High school and college students and parents are encouraged to attend for an introduction to the world of international maritime shipping as a lucrative and exciting career area.

Travel along with Tony on the Saltwater Highway to such far flung places as the Arctic Circle, the upper reaches of the River Plate, the shores of western Scotland and various capital cities of the world, including London, Moscow and Beijing to meet some of the people who shaped this business and to discover how maritime transportation impacts our daily lives.

“The Saltwater Highway unravels Whitworth’s fascinating life journey. Brilliantly insightful, his elegant prose brims with his love for maritime shipping. From his experiences as a novice in the field to the wisdom of a veteran in an industry that makes the world go round, his unexpected humor makes this informative book highly readable – and particularly enjoyable.”

Tony Whitworth was born and raised in Quebec City, Canada in an English and French milieu. After graduating from Queen’s University in Ontario he began his career in 1975 in international maritime transportation with Montréal-based Fednav Ltd, Canada’s largest maritime transportation company. While at Fednav he had postings in Montreal, London, Hamburg and Oslo. In 1982, he moved to Navios Corporation in Greenwich, Connecticut following Fednav’s initial investment in the company. He worked his way through various chartering and marketing portfolios and held senior posts including commercial vice president and executive vice president before taking over as CEO of Navios in 1999 after leading a management buyout of the company.

Following the sale of Navios in 2005, in 2011 Tony founded Sea Trade Holdings, a new maritime vehicle based in Stamford, Connecticut. As co-managing partner, he established the strategy that resulted in the company ordering nine mid-size, very fuel efficient dry bulk carriers from leading shipyards in Japan. The assets were sold in 2022.

Tony divides his time between homes in Connecticut and Quebec.

Elm Street Books will be selling copies and Anthony will be signing books after his talk. A portion of the proceeds goes to Wilton Library.
