Please join us for a special SPED*NET presentation by Dave Sylvestro in the Brubeck Room at Wilton Library. As we all know painfully well, being a child with special needs is often a confusing, frustrating and deflating experience. As we also know well, being the parent of these kids can be described with the same adjectives. Managing the academic idiosyncrasies, emotional unpredictability and social instability of our kids is not only a crucial responsibility for parents, it is also one that can drain our energy, overwhelm our patience and strain the relationship with our spouse. The different experiences each parent has with our kids can contribute to quite different perspectives on how best to guide them. It’s a struggle to parent from the same page when we sometimes question if we’re even in the same BOOK.
School psychologist David P. Sylvestro, MA, CSP, will discuss how parents can work to better sync their parenting philosophies and policies to be on the same page. Topics include enhancing their knowledge base related to their child’s overall profile, practicing the language of effective conflict resolution and expanding their affective vocabulary— the language of emotions.
Dave Sylvestro is a retired school psychologist from The Southport School, as well as from Eagle Hill Greenwich, where he served for over 35 years. He has facilitated individual- and group-counseling sessions, parent support groups and Dads-only groups as well as providing training and staff development to professionals. Dave continues to be a frequent presenter and support group facilitator in Fairfield County.
Presented by SPED*NET in partnership with Wilton Library and Wilton Public Schools.
