Someone said that Donald Justice “makes us pause in wonder at the quiet rightness of a simile” and the
shock of using experimental words. Donald Justice, 1925-2004, was a highly influential mentor to prominent poets Mark Strand, Charles Wright, Jori Graham, and Rita Dove. He expressed themes of memory, loss and chance through his various styles of formal, free, and experimental verse. He received the Pulitzer and highly prestigious Bollingen Prizes.

We will discuss his themes as we study his poems.

Janet Krauss, who has two books of poetry published, Borrowed Scenery, Yuganta Press, and Through the Trees of Autumn, Spartina Press, has retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.
