Louise Bogan provokes compassion in her readers through her salient images and direct, flowing style expressing themes affecting many who have suffered, loss, divorce, single motherhood and despair. Her poems move into Modernism, unlike her contemporaries, Pound or Eliot. Her voice speaks directly to us.
As a critic said, “Her poems are marked by sureness, economy and self-definition. No wasted words.”
We will explore that statement and her themes in our discussion.
Janet Krauss, who has two books of poetry published, Borrowed Scenery, Yuganta Press, and Through the Trees of Autumn, Spartina Press, has recently retired from teaching English at Fairfield University.
