Please join us as Carol Kaelin leads a discussion of Amity Shlaes's Coolidge. “Silent Cal” had been unfairly disdained by pundits and historians alike, that is until Amity Shlaes’s brilliant and provocative reexamination of the life of this restrained and soft-spoken man. From his origins in a tiny New England town to the height of political office, Coolidge’s quiet discipline enabled him to lead the United States to a decade of widespread prosperity while restoring trust in our national institutions after a period of corruption and excess. He was one of the few peacetime presidents to leave office with a federal budget that was smaller than the one he inherited. Widely praised from all political sides, Shlaes’s Coolidge is a “marvelous book that is in many respects as subtle and powerful as Coolidge himself. Shlaes’s masterly command of economics, policy, and personal portraiture illustrates the times, talents, character, and courage of the consummate New Englander” – Booklist.
