Please join us as Miwako Ogasawara leads a discussion of Penelope Fitzgerald's The Beginning of Spring. Penelope Fitzgerald has crafted a lovely, at times virtuosic, comedy of manners set in Russia in 1913 on the verge of the Bolshevik revolution. Although one of the main characters is a big Tolstoy devotee, this is not a novel of epic sweep. Instead, following a fairly simple plotline (wife leaves husband with kids, husband becomes involved with mysterious woman, etc.), Fitzgerald interweaves moments of sublimity and takes the reader on detours into ethereal worlds of gorgeous prose. From Publishers Weekly: “Booker Prize-winner Fitzgerald reveals here the depth of a distinct and imaginative talent to amuse….Rich in subtle characterizations, wit and wonderfully textured prose, Fitzgerald's seventh novel succeeds in evoking the very essence of life one long-ago spring at 22 Lipka Street.”
