Please join us as Amy Davenport leads a discussion of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth. Wharton’s 1905 novel placed her firmly on the literary map as one of America’s great writers. A biting social satire is set against the story of Lily Bart, a beautiful and well-born but impoverished woman seeking to secure a place in Manhattan’s late-19th century high society. Alas, for Lily it was not to be: her world of self-serving and cynical materialists would eventually destroy her, casually casting her aside like flotsam in the wake of a ship. In its 1905 review, The New York Times said that it’s "a novel of remarkable power" and that "its varied elements are harmoniously blended…Its descriptive passages have verity and charm, it has the saving grace of humor, its multitude of personages…all have the semblance of life.“ The novel has been adapted numerous times for both stage and screen.

This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton.
