Please join us as Miwako Ogasawara leads a discussion of Yukio Mishima’s Spring Snow: the first, and some argue the finest, book in Mishima’s tetralogy Sea of Fertility set in Japan in the early 1900s. It’s the story of the complex relationship between the son of a rising “nouveau riche” family and the daughter of a declining aristocratic one recounted in the context of social class disruption following increasing Westernization. Even in translation, Mishima demonstrates the power of Japanese poetry to evoke a sense of tragedy without veering into the melodramatic. In its review, the Chicago Sun-Times called it: “Perfect beauty.... A classic of Japanese literature.” Mishima himself said of it: "I have put into it everything I have felt and thought about life and this world."
This group meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding December. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240. Comstock Community Center, 180 School Road, Wilton.
