us as Caryn Friedman-Quinn leads a discussion of Daniel Mendelsohn’s An
Odyssey: A Father, A Son, and An Epic. Several years before the release o
f his highly acclaimed translation of Homer’s Odyssey, Daniel Mendelsohn
wrote a sort of memoir titled An Odyssey which recounts the literary and
interpersonal journey of Mendelsohn and his father with Homer’s great e
pic as the backdrop. At age 81, Jay Mendelsohn, a retired research scienti
st and Daniel’s father, decides to take his son’s undergraduate semina
r on Homer’s Odyssey. Following months of sometime contentious discussio
ns in the classroom, the two then embark on a Mediterranean voyage followi
ng those of the famed Odysseus. Needless to say, they both learn a lot abo
ut themselves and each other. Kirkus said in its review that this is “a
well-told story that underscores the power of storytelling…Revelations f
or Mendelsohn provide epiphanies for readers as well.”This group meets o
n the 4th Tuesday of each month from September through May, excluding Dece
mber. Call the Senior Center for details and to register at 203-834-6240.
