Please join us as Dr. Gil Harel presents a 3-part series on some of the post-"Time Out" musical directions followed by Dave Brubeck. We kick off the series on November 6 with "Brubeck's Musical Tableaus," a look at some of the music that came out of his travels to exotic locales. Then on November 20, Gil will present "Brubeck's Exploration of Time, Meter, and Rhythm: Successors to 1959's Time Out" which will explore the albums which filled out Dave's experiments with time signatures and polyrhythm. We conclude the series on December 4 with "Brubeck & Sons: Family, Faith, and Holiday Fun in the Twilight of the 20th Century."
Brubeck & Sons: Family, Faith, and Holiday Fun in the Twilight of the 20th Century
Few jazz musicians in the canon have enjoyed the longevity and lasting impact of Dave Brubeck. Having cemented his status as a jazz musician of generational importance with albums such as Time Out (1959), Brubeck showcased a vibrant and diverse style as he matured into an elder statesman of the community. During this period, family and faith can be seen as increasingly influential in his musical output. During this program, Professor Gil Harel will consider several albums that fall under this umbrella, including Two Generations of Brubeck (1973), which featured sons Darius, Chris and Dan. In To Hope! A Celebration, Brubeck's unique setting of the Catholic Mass became a musical reflection of his own faith and spiritual convictions. In Their Own Sweet Way (1998) saw the first studio recording of Dave accompanied by his four sons. Finally, A Dave Brubeck Christmas (1996) provides fun and whimsical takes on familiar tunes, welcoming listeners into the holiday season with unmistakable Brubeck flair.
